Wisconsin Alumni Association awards scholarships to outstanding students
The Wisconsin Alumni Association (WAA) has awarded scholarships to 16 outstanding students at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in recognition of their academic excellence, overall achievement and contributions to the campus community.
The 2008 Outstanding Student Awards recognize the accomplishments of four seniors with a life membership to WAA and a $250 award. In addition, four junior candidates have been awarded cash scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000. They are:
- Aleem Bakhtiar, senior, Mequon, Wis.;
- Leann Barden, senior, Milwaukee;
- Caitlin Butte, junior, Pewaukee, Wis;
- Claire Geiger, junior, Evanston, Ill.;
- Garrett Monasterio, junior, Maple Grove, Minn.;
- Michelle Phillips, junior, Fond du Lac, Wis.;
- Mollie Shambeau, senior, Waupaca, Wis.; and
- Samantha Shapiro, senior, Encino, Calif.
The Robert and Carroll Heideman Awards are given to students who demonstrate a commitment to community involvement and civic engagement. Awards range from $500 to $1,000. The 2008 recipients are:
- Caitlin Butte, junior, Pewaukee, Wis;
- Nicole Rupe, sophomore, Wausau, Wis; and
- Sarah Sanchez, junior, Milwaukee.
In addition, WAA has awarded seven students with the Arlie Mucks Jr. Spirit Scholarship, which honors the leadership and Wisconsin spirit of the late Arlie Mucks Jr., who served as executive director of the Wisconsin Alumni Association from 1962-89. Awards ranging from $500 to $1,000 have been awarded to:
- Briana Feeny, junior, Plymouth, Minn.;
- Claire Geiger, junior, Evanston, Ill.;
- Andrew O’Donnell, sophomore, Rosemount, Minn.;
- Sunyoung Park, sophomore, Busan, South Korea;
- Megan Severson, junior, Covington, La.;
- Rebecca Hallie Strauss, junior, La Crosse, Wis.; and
- Anne Wilcox, sophomore, Madison.
Founded in 1861, WAA offers UW–Madison students, alumni and friends a wide variety of services, including the award-winning On Wisconsin magazine, Badger Insider magazine, student scholarships, career services, international travel opportunities and lifelong-learning events.
