WiscMail system withstands latest virus
“MyDoom,” the latest computer virus making the rounds, did not cause disruptions of the UW–Madison’s WiscMail system, according to the Division of Information Technology.
DoIT quickly upgraded its virus definitions and infected messages did not get through. However, WiscMail users have likely seen messages related to the virus coming from other mail servers. The subject lines in the messages these users are receiving are typically: “Error,” “Status,” “Mail Transaction Failed,” or “hello.”
As always, campus users are urged not to open files or macros attached to an e-mail from an unknown, suspicious or untrustworthy source. Delete those attachments immediately, then “double delete” them by emptying your trash or recycle bin. DoIT also advises caution when opening suspicious e-mail attachments from friends or colleagues.
In addition, campus Windows users should update their personal Windows-based computers with a new security patch for Internet Explorer 5.01, Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Explorer 6.0 to correct several vulnerabilities. Users in university departments shoould check with their technical support staff before making changes.
