WAA’s Day on Campus features learning, tours

Adolescent peer pressure, advertising stereotypes and human emotions are just a few of the subjects that will be covered when the Wisconsin Alumni Association sponsors its 38th annual Day on Campus May 8 in the Memorial Union. The event features continuing education programs, a luncheon and campus tours. Topics include:

• “Coming of Age: The Significance of African-American Literature to the Liberal Arts Education,” Nellie McKay, professor of Afro-American studies and English;
• “The Emotional Brain,” Richard Davidson, professor of psychology and psychiatry;
• “Adolescents + Peers + Schools: A Formula for Disaster?” B. Bradford Brown, professor of educational psychology;
• “Gender Issues in Advertising,” Jacqueline Hitchon, associate professor of journalism and mass communication;
• “Health Care in the Twenty-first Century,” Philip Farrell, dean of the Medical School; and
• “Challenges in Fighting Disease: Exciting New Research Findings,” Virginia Hinshaw, dean of the Graduate School.

Judith Freifeld Ward, executive associate director of the Waisman Center, will give the keynote address at 1:20 p.m. in the Wisconsin Union Theater. A performance by jazz duo Les Thimmig and Tim Whalen will follow. Tours of the new Kohl Center, the Memorial Library Archives and the Department of Special Collections will complete the day. Also on May 8, distinguished alumni, teachers and academic staff will be honored with an awards program and reception at 5 p.m. in the Union Theater lobby. Student awards will also be presented at an alumni dinner in Great Hall at 7 p.m. Tickets are $28; call 262-9647 for reservations.
