Volunteers sought for study of autism, families

A new study at UW–Madison’s Waisman Center focusing on autism and family life is recruiting Wisconsin participants.

Marsha Seltzer, a UW–Madison Waisman Center researcher and social work professor, is director of the study. According to Seltzer, “the medical and genetic aspects of autism have been well-studied, but very little is known about family experiences and problems.”

“A critical time is when children with autism approach adulthood,” she added. “Families will begin to face questions about their son or daughter’s long-term future and independence.”

This study will include 200 Wisconsin families who have a son or daughter with autism. To participate, families must be caring for a son or daughter 14 years of age or older. The first round of data collection consists of an interview with mothers, and written questionnaires for mothers and fathers. All information shared is confidential.

Results of the study are intended to better inform policy-makers, practitioners, families and the general public of the needs of these families, and to advocate for better services.
