Vice provost for faculty and staff named
Steve Stern, Alberto Flores Galindo Professor of History, was appointed vice provost for faculty and staff, Provost Patrick Farrell has announced.
Stern will assume the role on July 1, when Professor Laurie Beth Clark returns full-time to her faculty position.
Stern teaches and researches Latin American history, often focusing on the various ways people cope with problems of power and social conflict in their societies.
In addition to his teaching and scholarship, Stern has served as director of the Latin American and Iberian Studies Program (LAIS), director of graduate studies in history during 1997–99, chair of the history department from 2003–06 and chair of the Equity and Diversity Committee of the College of Letters and Science since 2006.
Stern says he hopes to assist initiatives and programs that will enable faculty and staff to flourish intellectually and professionally — and to see UW–Madison as a long-term home.
Possible areas for his future efforts include support for diversity, interdisciplinary or cross-field engagement, and risk taking.
The vice provost for faculty and staff works closely with individuals in administrative offices, deans of schools and colleges, and other units across campus to address issues of concern to faculty and staff. For more information, visit http://www.provost.wisc.edu/facstaff.html
