Veterinary school dean named Veterinarian of the Year
Daryl D. Buss, dean at the School of Veterinary Medicine, received the “Veterinarian of the Year” award from the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA) on Oct. 8 during the organization’s annual convention in Madison.
The award is given by the WVMA annually to a member who has made major contributions to the advancement of the veterinary medical profession.
Buss has served as dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine since 1994. From the first, he actively promoted the veterinary profession both statewide and nationally. He helped shape national policy through service as president of the Association of American Veterinary Colleges, on the board of the National Commission on Veterinary Economic Issues, on the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Research and on that association’s committee to update standards for veterinary school accreditation.
He continues to serve on the board of the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, as ex officio WVMA executive board member, and on the USDA Secretary Ann M. Veneman’s Advisory Committee on Biotechnology and 21st Century Agriculture.
In addition to his administrative duties and commitments to national and state organizations, he continues to teach cardiovascular physiology and veterinary medical ethics to first-year veterinary students at the school.
Buss earned his DVM degree from the University of Minnesota and his master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
He resides in Madison with his wife, Sharon. They have one daughter, Jennifer.
