UWPD offers resources on campus violence

March 12, 2008

In the wake of campus shootings in the past year at Virginia Tech, Louisiana Tech and Northern Illinois University, the University of Wisconsin Police Department (UWPD) has developed a set of training resources for faculty and staff.

UWPD, in conjunction with other campus units, has a detailed crisis plan to respond to major incidents that might impact the campus community. However, faculty and staff can play a major role in helping to respond to or avert these situations by being aware and informed.

One-hour sessions on “Avenger Violence Awareness” will be offered at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26; 9:30 a.m. on Friday, March 28; 1:30 p.m. on Monday, April 14; and 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16, all at 21 N. Park St. “Avenger” violence refers to the personality profile of those involved in recent campus shootings.

Attendees will receive information on how to identify warning signs of a person in crisis, what to do with concerns about behaviors, violence as a process and the violence continuum, phases of mass casualty shooters, and what to do in the event of an active shooter incident.
