UWPD launches bicycle education and enforcement campaign
During the next month, the University Police Department will be conducting concentrated bicycle education and enforcement throughout campus.
Officers will conduct a period of education during which they will contact bicyclists about various violations. Individuals who are contacted during the education period will be provided with information on the violation and how they can improve their safety.
After the education period has been completed, officers will continue to make contacts, but they will be issuing citations for violations. Individuals receiving citations will be offered the opportunity to attend a practical bicycling seminar in lieu of making a court appearance.
The UWPD is committed to improving the safety of the university community by increasing compliance with traffic laws through education and enforcement. Although law enforcement efforts are an important part of public safety, the department relies heavily on the cooperation of the public to be aware of and follow all traffic laws, whether as pedestrians, bicyclists or motorists.
Information regarding safe bicycling can be found at www.dot.wisconsin.gov/safety/vehicle/bicycle/rules.htm
