UW-Madison zoologist elected to prestigious academy

Anthony Ives, Plaenert-Bascom Professor of Zoology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, has been elected to membership in the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Ives joins other scientists, writers, artists, and civic, corporate and philanthropic leaders in a class of 198 new members who will be inducted in October, the academy announced April 24.

This year’s new members include winners of the Nobel Prize, National Medal of Science, Pulitzer and the Shaw prizes, MacArthur and Guggenheim fellowships and Grammy, Emmy, Academy, and Tony awards.

Ives studies the way interaction among species in an ecological community may influence their response to changes in their environment, applying theoretical work to real-world scenarios such as insect population cycles in Icelandic lakes and predator-prey relationships in Wisconsin farm fields.

Headquartered in Cambridge, Mass., the academy is one of the nation’s most prestigious honorary societies and a leading center for independent policy research on science and technology, energy and global security, and American society institutions.
