UW-Madison ranked high by Washington Monthly

The University of Wisconsin–Madison has been named one of the top 30 universities in the country by Washington Monthly magazine.

The magazine ranked UW–Madison 28th in its annual College Guide and Rankings, based on three criteria: research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and Ph.D.s), social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students) and service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).

A few of the categories UW–Madison ranked high in include fourth in research expenditures, seventh in the number of science and engineering Ph.D.s awarded, 13th  in the number of alumni who go on to serve in the Peace Corps relative to school size, 20th in the number of faculty who are members of the National Academies relative to the number of full-time faculty, 25th in the number of faculty receiving prestigious awards relative to the number of full-time faculty, and 27th in student loan repayment rate.

Last year, the university was ranked 19th overall. (Methodology for this year’s ranking changed since the previous year.) This is the 11th year Washington Monthly has issued the ranking.

UW-Madison has also performed highly in other recent rankings. Earlier in August, the university was ranked 28th in the world in the

Academic Ranking of World Universities, conducted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Rankings are based on alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, research performance, highly cited researchers and papers published in the journals Nature and Science, articles indexed in the Thomson Reuters Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance based on the size of an institution.
