UW-Madison offers Halloween alternatives to State Street

If State Street isn’t your scene, there are numerous other activities scheduled across campus on Halloween weekend. Events listed below are free unless otherwise stated.

Thursday, Oct. 28

  • Great Pumpkin Party, 6-8 p.m., Union South. Students, faculty, staff and their children are invited to help introduce the children of international students to the Halloween tradition, including bobbing for apples, decorating cookies, telling scary stories and more. This event is for the UW–Madison community only.
  • Open Mic, 9 p.m.-1 a.m., der Rathskeller, Memorial Union.
  • Saddle and Sirloin Haunted House, 7-10 p.m., Stock Pavilion. Get ready for Halloween by coming to a haunted house run by College of Agricultural and Life Science clubs. Friday, Oct. 29

  • Behind the Beat featuring the Katie Todd Band, 4-6 p.m., der Rathskeller.
  • Halloween Dance with the UW–Madison Ballroom Dance Association, 7 p.m.-midnight, Memorial Union.
  • Admission is $2 for members, $4 for all others.
  • Laurie Anderson performance, 8 p.m., Wisconsin Union Theater. Renowned performance artist Anderson returns to Madison. Admission is $10 for UW–Madison students and ranges from $20-$36 for all others.
  • Global Connections Halloween Costume Party, 8-10 p.m., Memorial Union (check Today in the Union for room location). International students and their friends will learn about the Halloween traditions in the U.S. and around the world. The event, which is for the UW–Madison community only, will include snacks, music, prizes and contests.
  • Karaoke, 9 p.m.-midnight, Union South Games Room.
  • Free Art Fridays, 9 p.m.-1 a.m., in the Craftshop, located on the fourth floor of the Memorial Union. Participants can make their own Halloween masks. The cost is $2 for materials.
  • Performance by The Red Chemists with STEEZ, 9 p.m.-1 a.m., der Rathskeller.
  • Saddle and Sirloin Haunted House, 7-10 p.m., Stock Pavilion. See details above.
  • University Housing Food Service’s Frank’s Place coffeehouse will stay open until 12:30 a.m. Movies will be shown from 10 p.m.-midnight Friday and Saturday. Chadbourne will be open from 7:30-11:30 p.m. Friday and will provide some fun food for students. This event is for the UW–Madison community only.

Saturday, Oct. 30

  • Women’s soccer, Wisconsin vs. Northern Illinois, 1 p.m., McClimon Complex. Admission is $2 for students, $5 for others. For more information, call (608) 262-1811.
  • Women’s hockey, Wisconsin vs. St. Cloud State, 2:05 p.m., Kohl Center. Cost is $2 for students and $5 for the public. For more information, call (608) 262-1811.
  • Radioactive Halloween Party and Costume Contest, 8 p.m.-2 a.m., Union South Games Room. This party offers students an inexpensive, safe and fun alternative to other Halloween weekend activities. Unlimited pool, bowling, table tennis and more great games are available, plus free popcorn all night. Admission is $5.   • Performance by Barbwire Fence (Rock-a-billy) 9:30 p.m., der Rathskeller. For more information, contact Natasha Kassulke, kassulke@wisc.edu or (608) 262-7593.
  • “Copenhagen,” 4 p.m., Overture Center. This Tony Award-winning play is presented by Madison Repertory Theatre and sponsored by the College of Letters and Science. Tickets are available at the Overture Box Office or by calling (608) 258-4141. Tickets are half price with a valid student ID at box office.   • Men’s hockey, Wisconsin vs. Denver, 7 p.m., Kohl Center. Admission is $16-$20. For more information, call (608) 262-1811.
  • Women’s volleyball, Wisconsin vs. Minnesota, 7 p.m., Field House. Admission is $2 for students and $5 for others. For Saturday’s Halloween Bash, all fans dressed in costume will receive free admission. There also will be a Halloween costume contest during intermission. For more information, call (608) 262-1811.
  • Cellist Jean-Michel Fonteneau performs, 8 p.m., Mills Hall, Mosse Humanities Building. As part of the Guest Artist Series, Fonteneau of the San Francisco Conservatory joins UW–Madison’s Pro Arte Quartet for Schubert’s “Quintet in C major,” D. 956. The Pro Arte performs Beethoven’s “Quartet in E-flat major,” Op. 127. For more information, call (608) 263-9485.
  • University Housing Food Service’s Pop’s Club will sponsor a Haunted Midnight Breakfast from 10 p.m.-12:30 a.m. This event is for the UW–Madison community only.
  • Frank’s Place coffeehouse will stay open until 12:30 a.m. both Friday and Saturday with special treats. See above.

Sunday, Oct. 31

  • Halloween Ballroom Dance Party, 6:30-midnight, Great Hall of Memorial Union. Party will include a swing dance workshop by Dakota Windancer and Gwen Engel, followed by the dance party. Costumes are encouraged. A grand prize of either a private lesson at the Right Step Studio or a cash prize of $30 will be given for the best costume. Event proceeds fund the UW DanceSport Team.
