Unlicensed mopeds on campus to be ticketed and towed
With the arrival of September, the university is starting to ticket and tow unlicensed mopeds. Tickets range from $75-$115, depending on the violation.
State law (Sec. 341.15(3)(a), Wisconsin Statutes) requires that evidence of registration, namely a license plate, must be attached to a motor vehicle, and mopeds are considered to be motor vehicles. UW System policy UWS 18.05(5) gives the university the authority to tow unlicensed vehicles.
According to Renee Callaway of Transportation Services, mopeds without license plates will be ticketed and towed regardless of whether they are legally or illegally parked, because evidence of their registration is not being displayed.
Callaway says the owners of mopeds that have been towed as a result of a violation will have to go to one of the Transportation Services offices on campus to provide a copy of the vehicle’s registration before their mopeds will be released to them.
Transportation Services offices are located in the WARF Building at 610 Walnut St., Transportation Info Place on North Park Street outside of Memorial Union, and at the Clinical Sciences Center, 600 Highland Ave., Room G5/140.
