University Health Services selects clinical services director

Gerald Ryan has been named director of clinical services at University Health Services (UHS), the student health clinic at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

The director of clinical services provides direct medical care to students, supervises UHS physicians, nurses and other health care staff, and serves as a member of the senior management team for the organization.

“Dr. Ryan is uniformly praised for his excellent clinical skills and commitment to patient care,” says Sarah Van Orman, executive director of University Health Services. “He is known for his high energy and exacting standards of quality. I am delighted that he has accepted this position and look forward to his valuable contributions to our organization going forward.”

Ryan joined UHS in December 2007 as associate director of clinical cervices. He has been acting director of clinical services since August. He was a physician and clinical associate professor with the UW–Madison Department of Family Medicine from 1991-2007, where his responsibilities included being medical director for the physician assistant program and later director of primary care education for third-year medical students.

“Dr. Ryan has extensive experience in medical education and clinic management,” says Van Orman. “He has already successfully led clinical services through a period of significant change and growth during the move to our new facility.”

Ryan is board-certified in family medicine. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo and did his residency training at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, S.C.

The clinical services division of UHS includes primary care, dermatology, women’s health, sports medicine and sexual health clinics, as well as ancillary radiology and laboratory services. In an average year, UHS sees 50,000 patient visits in these clinics.

Ryan’s appointment is effective as of May 1. He will earn an annual salary of $158,000.
