University Communications relocates to Library Mall

February 22, 2005

With continuing changes to the west campus area, University Communications will relocate some staff and services to 711 State St. on Wednesday-Friday, March 9-11.

University Communications’ creative services unit, which has been located in the WARF Building since 1984, and the marketing, photography and online units — currently in Bascom Hall — will occupy the second floor of the University Book Store.

Writers and media relations, editorial and administrative staff will remain in Bascom Hall. University Communications, which publishes Wisconsin Week and produces On Wisconsin in partnership with the Wisconsin Alumni Association, will continue to have editorial offices in Bascom Hall.

The Medical School‘s Department of Population Health Sciences will assume the fifth-floor space of the WARF Building.

“We’re looking at the move as an opportunity to create some efficiencies for our staff and clients, enhance collaboration within our units and offer improved communications planning to our campus customers,” says Amy Toburen, director of University Communications.

Creative services staff provide graphic design, editorial services, print purchase and Web development for university clients, with an emphasis on design concepts for groups of related publications and communications planning.

The online team participates in the planning and production of electronic communications, including design and content for institutional Web sites, and is leading a redesign of the university’s home page.

Marketing staff deliver institutional messages through print and broadcast media, conduct opinion research, maintain the campus brand and partner with campus units on marketing, informational and outreach initiatives.

Photography staff support institutional print and online products, and maintain a comprehensive online photo library (http://photos.news.wisc.edu/) for use by campus units.

Staff telephone numbers and e-mail addresses will not change, and campus mail will be delivered to the new location. Phone and e-mail service will not be interrupted more than a day.

The move will take place over a two- to three-day period. Work in progress may slow down during this time, but deadlines for existing projects will be met.
