University Club now open to all employees

May 11, 2004

The University Club can now become the new spot for UW–Madison employees who want to grab a quick lunch or a cup of coffee, or to relax and enjoy a meal or beverage in the club’s charming ambiance.

The club is open for lunch to all university faculty, and academic and classified staff, regardless of whether they are dues-paying members. UW–Madison employees can invite non-university guests to join them for lunch.

“This permanent change in policy will increase access for members of the UW–Madison community to one of the most venerable institutions on campus,” says Richard Leffler, historian and former University Club board president and current board member.

On Tuesday, June 1, the club will introduce the Club Sandwich, a weekday, noon-hour service. It will feature express sandwiches, salads and soups for consumption in the Fireside Lodge or purchase to go. The Club Sandwich will be open weekdays, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

The club recently inaugurated its coffee shop, Club Caffè, which offers fine brewed coffee, Italian espresso beverages and delectable pastries Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. The fare can be enjoyed in the Reading Room, or during non-lunch hours on the veranda overlooking Library Mall.”

Those desiring a more leisurely meal can consider fine dining in the club’s Wayside Dining Room, featuring a full waitstaff and the cuisine of executive chef Matt Luther. It is open weekdays, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

With this membership policy change, members and departments that pay annual dues will continue to have privileges such as discounts on lunches, meal and room reservations, catering for meetings and billing accounts. The club offers private event catering for university and community members. Individual dues are $120 per year, $200 for departments.

The University Club opened in the early 1900s, with construction of the Tudor Revival building at the corner of Murray and State streets being completed in 1924. The university took over ownership and responsibility for the building in 1933.
