Union plans late-night movie series

January 30, 2001

Union South is becoming a hotbed of activity on weekends: live music at Club 770; “glow-in-the-dark” bowling, pool and other activities in the Games Room; and now, midnight movies in the Main Lounge.

Each Saturday, the Wisconsin Union Directorate Film Committee will show recent cult hits free of charge at midnight, starting on Feb. 3 with “High Fidelity,” starring John Cusack as a lovelorn record storeowner.

Other titles for February include:

  • “Pulp Fiction,” Feb. 10.
  • “Mallrats,” Feb. 17.
  • “Being John Malkovich,” Feb. 24.

The committee is still ironing out the schedule for the remainder of the semester. But members are already finding enthusiasm among fellow students for the February lineup, as well as appreciation for an additional venue to gather with other students and have fun that is “non-toxic,” that is, smoke and alcohol free.

“We see Midnight Movies as an opportunity for students to go out and be social on a Saturday night without having to go to parties, bars or some other locale,” says Sandy Lucas, film committee director.

In addition to grants from RWJ and Associated Students of Madison, Midnight Movies also received a mini-grant from the Wisconsin Alumni Student Board to cover the cost of soda and popcorn.
