U.S. News ranks graduate programs
UW–Madison earned several high rankings in the 2003 rating of graduate programs scheduled for release Friday, April 4, by U.S. News and World Report.
The annual “America’s Best Graduate Schools” report was first published by the magazine in 1990.
“The latest rankings show that UW–Madison has many strengths in graduate education across many disciplines,” says Martin Cadwallader, dean of UW–Madison’s Graduate School. “It is important that we continue to build upon our strengths in the coming years and uphold our commitment to provide our students with a first-class educational experience.”
The magazine does not survey all disciplines every year. The following rankings were drawn from the new data:
- Business, 46th, tied with the University of California-Irvine.
- Education, 9th, tied with Northwestern University. UW–Madison also ranked among the top ten in the education areas of administration/supervision (1st), education policy (3rd), educational psychology (1st, tied with Stanford University), elementary education (2nd), secondary education (2nd), special education (9th), vocational/technical (10th), counseling/personnel services (6th, tied with University of Minnesota-Twin Cities) and curriculum instruction (1st).
- Engineering, 15th. The program ranked among the top ten in the engineering areas of chemical (4th), nuclear (3rd, tied with three other universities) and industrial/manufacturing (10th).
- Fine Arts, 13th, tied with Arizona State University, California College of Arts and Crafts, Indiana University-Bloomington, Maryland Institute College of Art, Pratt Institute, Rochester Institute of Technology and the San Francisco Art Institute. UW–Madison ranked 1st in the area of printmaking.
- Health Disciplines, 19th in nursing, tied with Boston College, Columbia University, Ohio State University, Rush University, University of Alabama-Birmingham and the University of Texas-Austin; 2nd in rehabilitation counseling; and 8th in veterinary medicine.
- Law, 31st, tied with Brigham Young University, Fordham University, University of California-Davis and the University of Georgia.
- Medical, 6th in primary care, tied with the University of California-San Diego and the University of New Mexico; and 29th in research, tied with Mount Sinai School of Medicine. UW–Madison ranked 8th, tied with Duke University and the University of Colorado Health Science Center, in the specialty of family medicine.
