Teaching, learning symposium to examine ‘literacies’

April 27, 2004

This year’s Teaching and Learning Symposium, May 18-21, focuses on an expanded concept of literacy, one that encompasses information, communication, science, math and cultural literacy, in addition to reading and writing. All these “literacies” refer to fundamental abilities to identify and critically use information of all sorts, and to be able to communicate.

At the annual symposium, faculty, staff and teaching assistants can explore themes of mutual interest, share best practices and design solutions for common problems related to teaching and learning. The event opens with keynote addresses and breakout sessions on Tuesday, May 18, followed by learning showcases and hands-on workshops Wednesday-Friday, May 19-21.

This broader concept of literacy recognizes that different kinds of languages, discourses, and methods and modes of understanding and communicating are appropriate for different disciplines and activities. Issues of literacy are threaded throughout teaching and learning at all levels.

The 2004 Teaching and Learning Symposium is sponsored by the Office of the Provost; the Teaching Academy; the Division of Information Technology’s Learning Technology and Distance Education; the General Library System; UW System Office of Professional and Instructional Development; and Delta, a program of the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning.
