Recent sightings: Candlelight vigil
More than 100 people gathered Thursday, Dec. 18, on Library Mall for a candlelight vigil mourning the victims of a recent mass shooting at a school in Peshawar, Pakistan. The vigil was hosted by the Pakistani Students Association, a UW–Madison student organization.
Recent sightings: Creating Madison’s largest glass ornament
The glass artists known as Mad Gaffers are going festive with a series of holiday events this Thursday through Sunday at the UW Glass Lab. Participants can create a glass ornament of their own, watch Mad Gaffers blow the largest one in Madison, and shop for gifts at the club’s annual Holiday Sale.

Recent sightings: Blowing off steam
Geese and ducks swim in and fly above the steamy water of Lake Mendota as the sun rises above the dome of the Wisconsin State Capitol and downtown Madison skyline with temperatures in the single digits. Costumed faculty, staff and students from the UW–Madison Dance Department parade across Bascom Hill on Hallowen Friday, Oct. 31. The event was held in honor of two of the department's newly tenured professors, Kate Corby and Chris Walker.

Ghouls and goblins galore brought out the screams from visitors during the UW Saddle & Sirloin Haunted House held in the Horse Barn on Oct. 29. Admission to the event was $1 or a canned-food donation, with proceeds going to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Southern Wisconsin. The event continues Oct. 30 at 7.

Temperatures drop, leaves turn, days shorten and sometimes life slows down enough to contemplate next steps. "Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons," author Jim Bishop once wrote. On a campus known for its beauty, this season certainly rivals others for making us look around and take notice.

Plastic pink flamingos flock to Bascom Hill Tuesday, Oct. 7, for the annual "Fill the Hill" event, an initiative of the UW’s Annual Campaign. Event volunteers place a pink flamingo on Bascom Hill for each donation between 5 p.m. Oct. 6 and 5 p.m. Oct. 7.
