‘Sower in the Field’

Moving crews installed South African artist Mary Sibande’s sculpture "Sower in the Field" at UW–Madison's Chazen Museum of Art on Feb. 27. Sibande's works, exhibited in leading museums around the world, deal with race, gender and labor in South Africa, including her family's forced domestic work imposed by the then-apartheid state.

UW-built instrument will enhance views of distant galaxies

A near-infrared spectrograph, which splits light into its individual colors to form a rainbow-like spectrum, will soon be shipped to South Africa from UW–Madison. Custom-built here by staff in the Washburn Astronomical Laboratories, it will expand the capabilities of the Southern African Large Telescope.

On the wall, below the word “research,” are the motto “Today’s discovery, tomorrow’s cure” and a list of the facility’s major supporters and financial donors.
