Summer Band to play at Humanities courtyard

June 25, 2004 By Richard Mumford

With a nod to the tradition of band concerts on the American town green, the Summer Band at School of Music performs a free outdoor concert on Thursday, July 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the courtyard of Mosse Humanities Building.

Michael Lorenz directs the 60-piece ensemble comprising current and former UW–Madison students, current high school students and experienced musicians from the community. They play on the usual mix of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.

The program includes “The Transit of Venus March” by John Philip Sousa; “By Dawn’s Early Light” by Jay Dawson; “Eagle Creek March” by Mike Leckrone, director of bands at UW–Madison; and “In the Miller Mood,” a salute to the Glenn Miller Band.

Carrie Backman, a graduate of Edgewood High School and the University of Minnesota, will conduct “I Vow to Thee My Country,” and Dan Henkel, a recent graduate of the School of Music, will conduct a medley of selections from “The Music Man.”

In case of rain, the concert will be played in Mills Hall, located in the Mosse Humanities Building, which is located at the corner of Park Street and University Avenue on the UW–Madison campus.
