Students win solos with symphony
Solos with the Symphony Orchestra have been awarded to four music students. In addition, the symphony will perform a piece by a composition student.
Faculty judges selected Jeanette Jang, a sophomore violin performance major; Brenda Rae Klinkert, a senior voice major; Ilia Radoslavov, a Ph.D. candidate in piano performance; and Bernhard Scully, a master’s student in horn performance. Jang, co-concert mistress of the Chamber Orchestra, will perform Maurice Ravel’s “Tzigane.” Opera Props Award-winner Klinkert will present “Caro nome” from Verdi’s “Rigoletto.” Bulgarian native Radoslavov, winner of the 2001 St. Louis Artist Presentation Society Award, will play the first movement from Beethoven’ “Concerto No. 4 for Piano and Orchestra.” Scully has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra and will offer Reinhold Gli?e’s “Concerto for Horn and Orchestra, Op. 91.”
In addition, Jerry Hui, a senior graduating this spring with a degree in music composition and computer science, will premiere his new composition “Wang Zhao Jun.” Hui based the work on a poem by Shang-guan Yi (608-664), who tells the story of a servant girl who volunteers to marry the king of what is now Mongolia.
The free concert will be at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 4, in Mills Hall, Mosse Humanities. Information: 263-9485 or http://www.wisc.edu/music.
