Student services units settle into new spaces

Several student services units at UW–Madison are settling into new offices after summer moves from 905 University Ave.

The 905 University Ave. building, once home of the First Wisconsin Bank, is being demolished to make way for the new MBA wing of Grainger Hall.

As a result, the McBurney Disability Resource Center, the offices of the Division of Continuing Studies and College of Letters and Science-School of Human Ecology Career Services and PEOPLE and Posse Programs all have relocated to the W.S. Middleton Building, 1305 Linden Drive.

The Counseling and Consultation Services (C&CS) arm of University Health Services (UHS) has relocated to 115 N. Orchard St., just south of Dayton Street.

“Things have really worked out beautifully,” says Ann Groves Lloyd, director of the College of Letters & Science (L&S) Career Services. “Our space is amazing – lots of natural light, great offices, nice configuration, and a very professional look and feel. I don’t think we could be more pleased.

“Overall, we’re pretty settled in and are very proud of our new space,” she adds. “Most important of all, I think our students are really going to be pleased, once they find us.”

An open house for the building will be held from 3-4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

The Middleton Building is located directly across from the School of Human Ecology on the Route 80 and 81 campus bus lines. Because the building sits slightly below street and sidewalk level, an accessible wooden ramp has been built just to the east of the building on Linden Drive. Accessible parking is located directly behind the building in Lot 21.

One other adjustment for students and staff is the building’s main entrance, which faces the south end of the building – not Linden Drive.

“We’ve had a few people knocking on the windows with quizzical looks,” says B.A. Scheuers, interim director of the McBurney Center. “The true test is when students return to campus. We’re hopeful that they’ll find us.”

Additional signage for the building is being added to increase visibility. However, McBurney staff members will arrange appointments at Helen C. White or Memorial libraries, should that be more convenient for clients.

C&CS has moved into the former Rust and Schreiner Halls. The building is located about a half block from Union South, Engineering Library and Computer Sciences, with a Madison Metro bus stop one block away.

C&CS eventually will rejoin the rest of University Health Services in the future University Square development, slated to be finished in the next three to four years. A map of the new site is here: http://www.uhs.wisc.edu/display_story.jsp?id=78&cat_id=22

All UHS Counseling and Consultation services are located in the new building including individual and group counseling, psychiatry and massage therapy. The Campus Rape Crisis Center also is at the new location.

All e-mail addresses, Web site addresses and phone numbers remain the same for the units.
