Student group hosts hip hop workshop
This year’s All-Campus Party will not only be rockin’ with Talib Kweli but also with the moves of UW–Madison’s own hip hop team, Hypnotiq.
On April 22, from 6-8 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s Tripp Commons, Hypnotiq will host a hip hop workshop to give students a chance to practice old moves, learn some new ones and get a good workout.
“The workshop’s goal is really to promote health and reduce stress,” Hypnotiq member Stacy Loerch says. “It is not just about dancers; it is about the entire student body feeling better about their bodies, getting a good workout and relieving some stress during finals.”
Loerch emphasizes students of all skill levels — from never-danced-before to music-video-dancers — are encouraged to come and shake it.
Hypnotiq will perform before the workshop to pump up the crowd. Then the first hour of the workshop will focus on basic hip hop moves taught by nationally recognized choreographer Trae Turner. During the second hour, Turner will teach more advanced styles to participants and bump up the workout.
Loerch says the best part of the workshop is the diverse support it has received from the Ten Percent Society to the Chicano Studies Department to University Health Services.
“I just want to get as many people out as I can and relieve the stress of finals,” Loerch says. “We are reaching out to such a large population and everyone is coming together. That is really exciting.”
