STATEMENT BY UW-MADISON CHANCELLOR JOHN D. WILEY

Regarding proposed legislation to be introduced Aug. 9 by Assembly Representative Steve Freeese and State Senator Bob Welch; the legislation could prohibit embryonic stem cell research:

“The University of Wisconsin–Madison is poised to lead the nation in embryonic stem cell research, research that holds great promise for those suffering from Parkinson’s Disease, Juvenile Diabetes, Alzheimer’s Disease, and many other human ailments.

“We are currently in position to influence how this research is conducted, consistent with the high ethical standards we follow. The university opposes legislation that would restrict its ability to advance medical knowledge through this research.”
