Statement from Chancellor Wiley on Governor Doyle’s budget vetoes

“I would like to thank Governor Doyle for his efforts today to help the Wisconsin university system through tough budget times. His creativity in helping to find ways to bolster our most critical resources, those of our faculty and our students, has been most welcome.

Today’s announcement that he will veto the State Senate’s additional $35 million cut to the university system is welcome news as we are challenged to implement the remaining $90 million cut that was included in the budget passed by the Joint Finance Committee.

Just as important, Governor Doyle recognizes the financial hardships that some of our students face. I am very pleased that he has restored $8 million to the state’s financial aid programs. This funding will be critical in ensuring that talented students are not denied access to higher education because of their economic background. With this increase, Governor Doyle has achieved his admirable goal of doubling the state’s commitment to financial aid under his leadership.

I am also grateful that Governor Doyle recognizes the contributions our employees make to the university and to the students and state they serve. By vetoing the requirement that they contribute to their retirement plans, especially in a time of below-inflation pay adjustments, he has sent a clear message that the work they do is important.

Again, I appreciate the Governor’s efforts to support the UW System. We are hopeful that this is the beginning of a turnaround to the financial challenges the university has faced. We look forward to working with the Governor and the legislature to ensure that the university will continue to serve the educational and economic needs of Wisconsin.”
