Staff changes coming to transportation services

July 12, 2001

The university has chosen Lori Kay, director of Transportation Services, to help complete an overhaul of campus fleet operations.

Kay will leave Transportation Services July 23 to become a transportation consultant to the university, reporting to John Torphy, vice chancellor for administration. Michael Lovejoy, current director of business and staff services at UW–Madison Facilities Planning & Management will serve as interim director.

“I look forward to working with Lori in her new role at UW–Madison,” Torphy says. “I can think of no one more qualified to study how the university can improve its fleet operations.”

Kay’s initial assignment will be to work with the Department of Administration, Department of Transportation and the Department of Natural Resources to implement a computer system that makes campus fleet operations more efficient. She will help develop software that allows UW–Madison to more professionally manage the use, maintenance and purchase of university vehicles.

Kay will also work with UW–Madison on other special projects and issues, such as continuing to represent the university on Transport 2020, a committee studying ways to relieve congestion and improve mobility for Dane County commuters.

Since taking over Transportation Services in 1992, Kay has helped develop several key campus transportation initiatives, including Transportation Demand Management, which encourages campus employees to use alternative forms of transportation.

Kay was also instrumental in the development of SAFE Nighttime Services, a program providing free rides and escorts for students, faculty and staff. She has also taken leadership roles in customer service, campus planning, and transportation planning for both the city of Madison and UW–Madison.

As a transportation consultant, Kay will continue to earn her current annual salary of $85,948.

A search and screen committee will soon form to begin a nationwide search for a permanent director.
