Stadium sculpture installation postponed

The Homecoming-week installation of the 48-foot-tall sculpture “Nail’s Tales” by acclaimed sculptor Donald Lipski has been delayed because of difficulties in its fabrication.

The sculpture, to be located outside Camp Randall Stadium at Regent Street and Breese Terrace, was to have been installed and dedicated this week. Instead, officials hope it can be in place in time for the football Badgers’ home finale versus the University of Iowa on Nov. 12.

“I want it to be perfect. It is disappointing not to have it there for the Homecoming game, but I need to take the long view that it will be there for generations,” says Lipski, a UW–Madison graduate who has been awarded public art commissions around the nation, in places such as New York City, Washington, D.C., Miami and Denver.

The concrete, steel, stone and resin artwork, with a football theme, was commissioned by the Wisconsin Arts Board’s Percent for Art program. A formal dedication set for Thursday, Oct. 20 has been cancelled.
