Social Workers Confronting Racial Injustice Conference to feature Symone Sanders

The UW–Madison School of Social Work will host its fourth-annual Social Workers Confronting Racial Injustice Conference on Friday, January 26, 2018.

This conference is unique on campus: it is geared toward both students in our social work programs and practicing social workers in our community. The day will include more than 15 workshops and presentations by local and national experts.

Symone Sanders will keynote the conference with a presentation called, “Black History, American History.” Sanders rose to prominence as the press secretary for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign. She will also lead one of 15 breakout workshops.

Five hundred people have registered. The combination of campus and community involvement as well as the timely nature of the conference theme are expected to appeal to a wide audience.

The conference challenges social workers to engage in racial and social justice action. This year, registration filled up in less than three days.

This year’s theme is Womxn at the Forefront. “Womxn” is spelled with an “x” to be inclusive of trans and non-binary community members.

The conference highlights UW–Madison School of Social Work’s commitment to support students and community members working for social change.
