Silver Buckle Press symposium today

“Hot Type in a Cold World,” a UW–Madison symposium Thursday and Friday, Nov. 19-20, will look at letterpress printing and the book arts in a world gone digital.

The UW–Madison Silver Buckle Press will host the program, which celebrates the UW Press’s 25th year as part of the UW–Madison libraries. The program begins at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, with a public reception in the Department of Special Collections, 976 Memorial Library, for the exhibit “Silver Buckle Press: Twenty-Five Years of Exquisite Printing.”

On Friday, Nov. 20, a series of presentations and panel discussions will be open to the public at no charge in Morgridge Auditorium of Grainger Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Speakers will include Peter Verheyen, book conservator at Syracuse University, N.Y.; Martha Carothers, head of the University of Delaware Art Department; Alastair Johnston, writer and cofounder of Poltroon Press; and Leda Black, independent graphic designer and book artist.

The Silver Buckle Press is a working letterpress museum operated by the UW–Madison General Library System. Additional support for the symposium comes from the campus Brittingham Fund and the Anonymous Fund.
