SERF expansion includes cooling
An expansion project at the Southeast Recreational Facility will include air conditioning for a small portion of the building.
Construction is set to begin later this month on the $6.6 million expansion project. The revised cost includes an extra $275,000 approved by the UW System Board of Regents at its February meeting to add air conditioning to the existing administrative area, racquetball courts, weight room, circuit training area and cardiovascular exercise room.
The vast majority of the building, including the basketball/volleyball courts, swimming pool and corridors will not have air conditioning.
Budget cuts prevented the installation of air conditioning when the building was constructed in 1983.
The expansion project also includes a three-story addition to SERF, which will house four basketball/volleyball courts on the first two levels and an aerobics facility with space for cardiovascular and dance training on the top level.
The state building commission must give final approval to the revised project. The project should be completed by August 2003.
