School of Music hosts prestigious chamber ensemble

September 29, 2003

The Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings is coming to UW–Madison on Saturday, Oct. 4, to perform in Mills Concert Hall at 8 p.m. The concert is being presented as part of the School of Music’s Guest Artist Series, and admission is free.

This is an excellent opportunity to see and hear some of the country’s finest musicians in an unparalleled display of chamber music from a variety of time periods.

Led by former UW–Madison director of bands H. Robert Reynolds, the Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings is entering its 22nd year as an ensemble dedicated to bringing to life the large and wonderful body of repertoire utilizing between six and 20 musicians. Many of these works go largely unheard in professional concert halls due to their unusual instrumentation. Originally focusing on music for wind and brass players, the ensemble has recently expanded to encompass an outstanding component of string instrumentalists. For this engagement, however, the ensemble is composed of flute, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, trumpet and conductor.

Many of the artists who perform with the ensemble play in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. On Oct. 4, they will perform a program that begins with Sinfonia Concertante, MWV VIII 2 by Johann Melchior Molter (1696-1765), and Serenade No. 11 in E-flat major, K. 375 by W. A. Mozart (1756-1791). After a brief intermission, they continue with Projectus by David Dzubay (b. 1964), and conclude with Jeux d’Enfants by Georges Bizet (1838-1875).

Mills Hall is located at 455 N. Park St. in the Mosse Humanities Building on the UW–Madison campus, at the corner of Park Street and University Avenue.
