School of Music hosts a full weekend of concerts

The School of Music offers an abundance of concerts featuring faculty artists, student ensembles and guest soloists.

The Faculty Concert Series presents Christopher Taylor in a solo piano recital on Friday, Nov. 21, at 8 p.m. Taylor begins with Sonata in G major, Op. 31, No. 1, by Beethoven. He continues with “Six Etudes” and “Six New Etudes” by the American composer George Perle. Following intermission, he concludes with six of the “Transcendental Etudes” by Liszt.

The Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble performs under the direction of John Stevens on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 4 p.m. The program includes music by Mozart (arranged by Stevens), Vaclav Nelhybel, Jan Koestier, Karel Husa and Verne Reynolds. The ensemble also will perform “Toccata,” an arrangement of Aurelio Bonelli’s antiphonal music by Michael Anderson, a freshman studying tuba at the School of Music. The free program concludes with “Semper Fidelis,” by John Philip Sousa.

Beverly Taylor directs the Choral Union and Chamber Orchestra in two performances of Haydn’s oratorio “The Creation,” on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 23, at 7:30 p.m. The three soloists are soprano Janet Brown, tenor Bruce Gladstone and baritone James Maddalena. The combined forces on the extended stage will number about 190, with 150 singers (from campus and community) and 40 instrumentalists.

All concerts are in Mills Hall in the Mosse Humanities Building. Tickets for the faculty concert and Choral Union may be purchased through the Wisconsin Union Theater Box Office, 262-2201. Faculty Concert Series tickets are $9, $7 for seniors and non-UW-Madison students. UW–Madison students are admitted free with valid student ID. Tickets for the Choral Union concerts are $12, $6 for senior citizens and UW–Madison students. Tickets may be purchased at the lobby beginning 45 minutes prior to the concert.
