Photo of band director Mike Leckrone

Bird’s-eye view
Perched atop a tower made of scaffolding, UW Marching Band director Mike Leckrone oversees a band practice at the west campus playing fields. Inspiring teamwork and expecting near-perfection in the Marching Band for the past 37 years, Leckrone says with a grin, “As long as they keep getting better, I’ll keep on going … I’ve got nothing better to do.” (Photo: Jeff Miller)

At left, senior Martin Salas participates in traditional Native American dances. Photo of homecoming cardboard boat race

The challenge: Take 8 pieces of cardboard, two garbage bags and two rolls of duct tape, and build a boat within one hour. About 15 groups of students participated in Bucky’s Barge Building Contest as part of 2005 Homecoming celebrations. Two members of each team then had to paddle their soggy contraption between two docks on Lake Mendota. Some of the box boats proved surprisingly lakeworthy; other teams’ moods proved more buoyant than their boats. UW–Madison’s Homecoming celebrations last through Saturday, Oct. 22, when the Badgers take on the Purdue Boilermakers. (Photo: Michael Forster Rothbart)
