Playing with fire
Painting the nighttime sky with streaks of fire, Madison resident Miranda Knox dances on Library Mall to the beat of music being played by a nearby capoiera student group. Both Knox and the capoiera group were present for Global Village, a Wisconsin Welcome event showcasing international student organizations and the cultures of different countries. Knox, an aspiring acupuncturist, first learned about fire poi, or dancing with fire, during a visit to Thailand. (Photo: Jeff Miller)

While animal sciences professor and chair Dan Schaefer, at left, holds up signs noting his department’s group, animal sciences professor John Parrish checks a list of names to match students with advisers during a College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) new student ice cream social. Held at the Allen Centennial Gardens during Wisconsin Welcome, the event introduced students to their new academic home. It featured Babcock Dairy ice cream, a signature treat made at the CALS dairy plant. (Photo: Jeff Miller)
