Photo of new greenhouses being constructed

Unexpected beauty
The greenhouses under construction on Walnut Street offer a surprising view as they are illuminated by car and street lights in the darkening sky. Lynn Hummel, research program manager for the Agriculture Research Stations, says that the 32 new research greenhouses being built to the north of the old greenhouse site replace 31 dilapidated wood-framed structures. Construction is scheduled for completion in July. (Photo: Jeff Miller)

Photo of work on Bascom Hall columns

Single column photo
Workers from Renaissance Restoration use a hydraulic lift to hoist the first of six repaired 22-foot-tall bald cypress columns, weighing more than 1,500 pounds each, back into place in the east portico of Bascom Hall on Dec. 2. The project began in August and includes restoration of rotted wood around the columns’ bases and capitals, and deteriorated sandstone around the building’s main entrance and front steps. Photo of flags on Bascom Hill

Silent memorial
Pedestrians pause to reflect on a display of 7,000 red flags placed along lower Bascom Hill, representing the number of lives lost each day to HIV/AIDS. The display, sponsored by the Campus Women’s Center, was in honor of World AIDS Day on Dec. 1. Events held from Nov. 29-Dec. 4 explored issues surrounding HIV/AIDS, and the national theme, “Women, Girls, HIV and AIDS,” was a focus on how the effects of HIV/AIDS have increased among females. The week included a NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt Display, panel discussions, speakers and free HIV testing by University Health Services. (Photo: Jeff Miller)
