Photo of pier removal

No lifeguard on duty
As summer transitions to fall, Physical Plant carpenters Sandy Thistle, Barry Woodrick and Darrell Endres begin breaking down sections of a swimming pier in Lake Mendota along the Memorial Union Terrace. Pictured here in a perfected balancing technique, Endres goes out on a limb to remove sections of railing. The carpenters say the swimming pier takes 3-4 days to install and 2-3 days to remove, followed by a respite of six to seven maintenance-free months. (Photo: Jeff Miller)
