Kites on us
As spectators gather on Lake Mendota near the Memorial Union Terrace to watch the annual Kites on Ice festival, Mike Conway and his son Cory of Sun Prairie dash from beneath one of three 27-foot-diameter crowns, also known as ground bouncers, that are anchored in the ice, and lift and spin in the wind. A real head scratcher
Mathematics graduate student Jeremy Rouse races to complete calculus equations during the university’s first Math Integration Bee. He and 14 student finalists competed side by side in randomly selected pairs before approximately 50 spectators in Sterling Hall. Sponsored by the Wonders of Physics program and the physics department, the event was devised to generate excitement and encourage students to learn more math skills. Four rounds and 35 integrals later, mathematics graduate student Boian Popunkiov was named the “Grand Integrator of Madison” and awarded a $100 prize donated by the University Book Store.
