Reflections on running
A runner jogs along the Temin Lakeshore Path between frozen University Bay and a puddle, reflecting the duality of this winter season, acting as its usual frigid self one minute, then tempting us with a whiff of spring the next. (Photo: Jeff Miller)

A dancer blurs past observers during the annual Wunk Sheek Powwow at the Field House. Native American students from the Wunk Sheek student organization and others organize the annual daylong event, which this year included a drum roll call, other ceremonies and a feast. Student radio plans launch
Students at WSUM, shown here “netcasting” over the Internet (as they have since since 1997) soon will be on the air. With a flip of a switch Friday, Feb. 22, WSUM-FM 91.7 will complete the university’s long journey toward broadcast student radio. At 2:22 p.m., the station will begin broadcasting, marking the first time a licensed UW–Madison station has transmitted over the FM band. The first program will be “Welcome to WSUM,” hosted by WSUM sports director Evan Cohen. The station, offering a mix of local, underground and alternative music along with UW–Madison news, sports and talk, is based in The Towers, 602 State St. Its 403-foot, 5,600-watt broadcast tower is located in rural Dane County.
