Rusted, mangled, seemingly abandoned bicycles, one even stripped of most parts, remain locked to a bike rack in front of Engineering Hall. Transportation Services and University Housing remove an average of 150 unclaimed bikes from campus annually after hopeful signs of ownership diminish. Following the end of each semester, bikes are tagged for 10 days with a warning of removal notice, then the locks are cut and the bikes impounded for another 60 days. Unclaimed bikes are finally sold through UW SWAP or destined for the scrap metal pile. (Photo: Jeff Miller)
