It’s a longstanding spectacle amidst the hubbub of Memorial Union’s first floor: A pair of players quietly absorb themselves in the intricacies of chess, hunched over a chessboard with a clock counting down as each in turn contemplates putting the best bishop forward – or diagonally, rather. Chess, a game with roots extending back two millennia, persists today as a pickup game outside the main entrance to the Rathskeller, where would-be grandmasters set up and wait for takers. The lineup varies from day to day, as does the attention onlookers pay to the games in progress. Some days, a player plots a brilliant strategy unnoticed, while other times, a player is slowly vanquished under the watchful eyes of a small group of onlookers. Checkmate! (Photo: Jeff Miller)
