Pull your own proof at Silver Buckle event
The Silver Buckle Press, 236 Memorial Library, is offering a behind-the-scenes look as staff members ink up and proof their newest acquisition of type — a face based on the type Johann Gutenberg used for the 42-line Bible — during an open house from 1-4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22.
The historically accurate type has 245 unique characters and is sufficient to set any two of the 42-line Bible’s 1,282 pages. The press will use the type to demonstrate aspects of early printing. Those attending will have a chance to pull a proof impression.
Next April, the press will sponsor a symposium, “Hot Type in a Cold World II: Recasting Gutenberg.” It will feature recent scholarship on Gutenberg and how computer-facilitated research has contributed to new theories of early typefounding.
