Police address moped safety

November 4, 2003

In response to complaints, the UW police department has initiated a moped safety education and enforcement effort.

To promote awareness and enhance safety, officers will hand out fliers to moped operators and issuing warnings, citations or both for violations.

Common violations include driving on sidewalks; carrying a passenger; passing on the right; disregarding traffic signs and signals; failing to yield to pedestrians; and operating in a bicycle lane.

Transportation Services also has developed a free courtesy-awareness poster that can be posted in moped parking areas, on bulletin boards or in other areas. To obtain posters, contact Alison Carpenter, 263-2969, acarpenter@fpm.wisc.edu.
