Pianist Brendel caps Union concert series

One of the great musicians of the last century, pianist Alfred Brendel will perform Friday, April 28, at the Wisconsin Union Theater to close out the 80th Annual Union Theater Concert Series.

The performance will mark Brendel’s fifth appearance on the Union’s stage. He first performed here in 1973.

Brendel ranks among the most esteemed pianists of our time, captivating audiences and critics alike with his masterful interpretations. His traversal of the great piano literature has resulted in many memorable and history-making concerts, including a survey of the later piano works of Schubert and the piano sonatas of Beethoven.

Brendel is legendary for his ability to convey, with unerring faithfulness, the emotional and intellectual development of the music he performs.

In addition, Brendel is knowledgeable in the fields of literature, language, architecture and film. “Musical Thought and Afterthoughts,” a selection of his articles and lectures, enjoys much success on both sides of the Atlantic, as does a volume of essays, “Music Sounded Out,” published by Farrar, Straus and Girous.

His latest collection of poems, “One Finger Too Many,” was recently published in the U.S. by Random House.

For his appearance at the Union Theater, Brendel will perform Haydn’s Sonata in E flat major, Mozart’s Sonata in B flat major and Adagio in B minor, along with Schubert’s Sonata No. 16 in A minor.
