Percussion groups from South Korea, U.S. perform at Mills Hall

The Guest Artist Series at the School of Music presents the Academy Percussion Ensemble from South Korea and the U.S.-based Galaxy Percussion Group on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. in Mills Hall.

Each ensemble will perform works in its own traditions separately prior to combining forces for the program’s finale. Admission is free.

The Academy Percussion Ensemble was founded in 1993 by its current director, Kangku Lee. APE annually performs youth, traveling and specialty concerts during which it provides information and musical examples to help audiences gain a better appreciation of the percussion medium. Currently, it is focused on commissioning and premiering new works by young Korean composers.

Galaxy Percussion Group was initially formed at the request of legendary marimbist Keiko Abe to perform with her on a concert tour of Japan and later at the international convention of the Percussive Arts Society in Nashville. Its members include Roger Braun, Jamie Ryan, Michael Udow and Anthony Di Sanza, professor of percussion at UW–Madison.
