‘Passage of Oracles’ returns

April 23, 2002

“Passage of Oracles,” an innovative combination of dance, music and martial arts, returns to the Wisconsin Union Theater Saturday, May 4 at 8 p.m.

The free public performance will be the centerpiece of a national outreach conference sponsored by the Wisconsin International Outreach Consortium and the U. S. Department of Education, “Bringing the World Home: Toward a National Community of Outreach Educators,” May 2-4. A post-performance workshop for high school students follows the production.

“Passage of Oracles” commemorates the passages of Asians and Africans to and within the United States, and the contributions of their labor to the American landscape. Choreographer, producer and director Peggy Myo-Young Choy describes the performance as a “danscape – a map of insight and empowerment for the future, which links to the past while creating a new geography of movement, sound and story.

“The performance creates a visceral landscape of multicultural movement, music, history and myth,” adds Choy, who is on the faculty of the Dance Program.

The post-performance workshop allows students to interact with university student mentors and the artists. To sign up, e-mail: nmarquez@students.wisc.edu.
