Online program honored

May 25, 2002

UW–Madison programs recently were recognized by the University Continuing Education Association for excellence in university outreach.

  • UCEA recognized the online Master in Engineering Professional Practice with its “Outstanding Credit Program Award” as a model for professional education in institutions across the nation. MEPP serves practicing engineers who want to improve their professional credentials while continuing to work full time. The two-year program includes extensive online learning, as well as annual weeklong summer residencies. The association notes that the program “provides an excellent example of how Web-based education can successfully complement traditional, on-campus education.” UCEA also recognized MEPP with a separate award as a Distance Learning “Program of Excellence.”
  • Miriam Simmons, assistant dean in the Graduate School, won UCEA’s Stanley C. Robinson Distinguished Service Award for her work promoting continuing education.
  • Two programs conducted by the Liberal Studies and the Arts Department in the Division of Continuing Studies earned UCEA Frandson Awards. Writers Institute earned for “Sustained Excellence.” Now in its 13th year, the institute brings beginning and experienced writers to Madison for two days each summer to meet with authors, editors, agents and others in the writing business. The Early Music Festival, which brings together performers, students, teachers and fans of early music, earned an award for “Innovative Programming.”

UCEA’s Region IV, which includes Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan, also recognized Wisconsin’s efforts with four regional awards, announced late last year.

  • A scholarship set up in memory of Professor Nancy W. Denney to support UW–Madison students who are single parents was recognized by UCEA as an Exemplary Program in Continuing Education Student Services, one of two such awards given. The second went to a UW System program, Learning Innovations, for its innovative software system, Learner Relationship Management System.
  • The Adult and Student Services Office in the Division of Continuing Studies received an award for economic and community development for its “Professional Enrichment and Leadership Development Program.”
  • And Region IV recognized Narra Smith Cox, associate professor in the Professional Development and Applied Studies Department of the Division of Continuing Studies, with its “Professional Continuing Educator Award.”
