Online chat: Graduate School reaches out to prospective applicants

October 12, 2011

The Graduate School is once again gearing up to host an online chat on the topic “High Impact Application: Making an Impression with your Graduate School Application.”

Based on the success of last year’s event, where nine panelists answered approximately 115 questions posed by 74 prospective applicants, efforts this October will be doubled with both a noon and an evening online chat.  The events will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, and from noon-1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

At last fall’s chat prospective applicants posed a variety of questions, such as writing an effective statement of purpose, application fees and fee waivers, acceptance timeline, reapplying after being denied admission, pursuing fellowships and other funding, GRE score guidelines and more.  The majority of participants indicated that UW–Madison was among their top picks and that they had already started an application. At the end of the event, participants stated that the event was “very informative,” “a great idea” and “really helpful.”

Panelists representing the Graduate School and two academic programs had a blast with the collaborative nature of the chat, answering live questions using a new medium. These online chats are hosted by the Graduate School CORE committee (Collaborating Offices for Recruitment and Retention Enhancement).
