Numerous city, campus events honor Martin Luther King Jr.

The Madison and university communities will have a number of opportunities to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through sponsored events around the city. A list of events follows:

• The entire community is invited to the 22nd annual Free Community Dinner, “4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, Gordon Commons. For more information, call Ruth Gundlach, 233-5880.
• 25th Annual Urban League Guild Youth Recognition Breakfast, 7:45 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, Edgewood High School, 2219 Monroe St. Cost is $5. Call 251-8550 for tickets.
• 11th Annual Youth Service Day, 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, Monona Terrace. The day features youth-led educational forums, community volunteer projects, President’s Student Service Awards and the third annual Youth March on the Capitol Square. • Martin Luther King Jr. City-County Observance: The Inspiration of Dreams, The Responsibilities of Change, 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, Overture Center Capitol Theatre, 201 State St.

This year’s distinguished keynote speaker, the Rev. Dr. Trinette V. McCray, is engaged in ministry across the country as well as in her hometown of Milwaukee. McCray serves as president of the Housing Ministries of American Baptists in Wisconsin, which provides support to those directly impacted by systemic poverty, as a board member of Sojourner Truth House, serving victims of domestic violence, and as a county appointed official on the Milwaukee County Ethics Board.

The Community Choir, directed by UW–Madison’s Leotha Stanley, performs.

• The 29th annual State of Wisconsin Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be held on the first floor of the Capitol Rotunda from noon-1:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 19. The “Dare To Live our Dream” program features WISN TV/Milwaukee news anchor Toya Washington, Highway To Heaven Big Band, MLK Mass Choir, pianist Leotha Stanley, gospel singer Debbie Biddle, pianist Michael Hillestad, contralto Tisha Brown, Soles-Musica Mexicana, soprano Carmen Fisher, harpist Karen Atz, spoken word poet Diane Harris, and Wisconsin Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton, who will present the state proclamation honoring Dr. King and the MLK Heritage Awards honoring Milwaukee’s urban farmer Will Allen and the Madison Urban Ministry. This year’s event also features guest speaker Keith Beauchamp, filmmaker of the documentary “The Untold
  Story of Emmett Louis Till.” Live broadcasts of the event are also available: on the Ideas Network of Wisconsin Public Radio; Wisconsin Public Television; and the Wisconsin Channel on the Web.
