New York Times business reporter to visit campus
Diana Henriques, investigative reporter for the business desk of the New York Times, will serve as the fall semester’s business writer in residence Sept. 28-Oct. 2.
Her residency will include a public talk on “Business Literacy for All Journalists: You Can Run But You Can’t Hide” on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 3:30 p.m. She will speak in the Nafziger Room of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication on Vilas Hall’s fifth floor.
Henriques joined the New York Times as a financial reporter in 1989 after writing for Barron’s National Business and Financial Weekly for three years. At the Times she has specialized in reporting on financial fraud, white-collar crime and corporate governance issues. The Times has submitted her work for a Pulitzer Prize four times in nine years.
From 1982 to 1986, Henriques was a business writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Before that she was an investigative reporter for the Trenton (N.J.) Times. Her articles there prompted several criminal prosecutions and statewide reforms.
Henriques is the author of two books, “The Machinery of Greed: Public Authority Abuse and What to Do About It” and “Fidelity’s World: The Secret Life and Public Power of the Mutual Fund Giant.” She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of George Washington University and was the school’s commencement speaker last May.
The Henriques residency is part of the ongoing Business Writer in Residence program, sponsored by the School of Business, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and Office of News and Public Affairs, with support from the UW Foundation. During the week Henriques will speak to classes in journalism and business, consult with individual students and give a talk in the “What Matters to Me and Why” series in Chadbourne Hall.
